Seismic triggering by rectified diffusion in geothermal systems

چکیده
Widespread seismicity was triggered by the June 28, 1992, Landers California, earthquake at a rate which was maximum immediately after passage of the exciting seismic waves. Rectified diffusion of vapor from hydrothermal liquids and magma into bubbles oscillating in an earthquake can increase the local pore pressure to seismically significant levels within the duration of the earthquake. In a hydrothermal system modeled as a two-component H•O-CO• fluid in porous rock the pressure initially increases linearly with time. The rate of pressure buildup depends sensitively on the mean bubble radius and is large for small bubbles. The diffusion-induced pressure is relaxed by percolation and resorption of vapor into the liquid solution. The induced seismicity itself also relieves stress. Values of parameters used in the present calculations give results consistent with observations of triggered seismicity at Long Valley caldera after the Landers earthquake. For one representative condition, at 250øC and 5.6 km depth, oscillating strain acting on 10-/•m-diameter bubbles increases pore pressure at the rate of 151 Pa/s resulting in a pressure increase of 12 kPa in the 80-s duration of the Landers earthquake. The elevated pressure induced by a single 26-m-diameter cloud of bubbles in saturated rock relaxes by percolation through soil of 0.2-mdarcy permeability in 53.6 hours. Observations of earthquake swarms at other locations suggest that self-induced buildup of pore pressure by rectified diffusion can provide a positive feedback mechanism for amplifying seismicity.

A limit on the effect of rectified diffusion in volcanic systems
[1] Forced oscillations can push dissolved volatiles into bubbles by a process called rectified diffusion. In engineering applications, the pumping action of rectified diffusion makes bubbles grow. In the geosciences, rectified diffusion is a suggested mechanism to trigger volcanic eruptions with seismic waves generated by distant earthquakes. Previous geoscience studies adopted the engineering...

Passing seismic waves released by large-magnitude earthquakes may affect geological systems located thousands of miles far from the epicenter. TheM9.0 Tohoku earthquake struck on 11 March 2011 in Japan. We detected local seismic activity at the Larderello-Travale geothermal field, Italy, coinciding with the maximum amplitudes of the Rayleigh waves generated by the Tohoku earthquake. We suggest ...
متن کاملNew constraints on mechanisms of remotely triggered seismicity at Long Valley Caldera
[1] Regional-scale triggering of local earthquakes in the crust by seismic waves from distant main shocks has now been robustly documented for over a decade. Some of the most thoroughly recorded examples of repeated triggering of a single site from multiple, large earthquakes are measured in geothermal fields of the western United States like Long Valley Caldera. As one of the few natural cases...
متن کاملSeismicity in Idaho and Montana Triggered by the Denali Fault Earthquake: A Window into the Geologic Context for Seismic Triggering
We present a case study of dynamically triggered seismicity in Idaho and western Montana from the 2002 MW 7.9 Denali fault earthquake to investigate the relationship between measured geological discriminants and propensity for triggering. We first establish triggering. We find events that are not reported in the Advanced National Seismic System catalog in Idaho and Yellowstone following the Den...
متن کاملAn investigation into the remote triggering of the Oita earthquake by the 2016 Mw 7.0 Kumamoto earthquake using full wavefield simulation
High-amplitude seismic waves from the Mw 7.0 Kumamoto earthquake of April 16, 2016, triggered another large earthquake 80 km to the NE roughly 30 s later. The source was located at shallow depths beneath the Yufuin geothermal field, Oita Prefecture, Japan, and the event magnitude was approximately 5.9. To date, this is one of the clearest known examples of a remotely triggered large earthquake....
